The fund, named in memory of Michelle Adey who died in 1982 of cystic fibrosis at age 6, provides financial assistance to families caring for a seriously ill child. The giving area is primarily the counties of Oneida, Madison and Herkimer. Since its inception, the fund has dispersed close to one million dollars to help with medical expenses, travel, lodging and other such costs.

The 39^th annual Michelle Adey Golf Open was held on Monday July 10 at Teugega Country Club. Ninety-eight golfers participated in the scramble.

This season, we received 1,752 applications requesting almost $5 million in support while we had just over $1.88 million to donate. The Stewart’s Holiday Match program has now allocated more than $32 million since the program’s inception. Longtime friends Lou Viviani and Steve Campanaro are spending their day today like many friends — out on the golf links.

The pair, however, won’t just play a friendly round of 18 holes — instead, they’ll add another 82 holes — for a total of 100 holes of golf at the Teugega Country Club — going from sun-up to sun-down to raise funds and awareness for two Rome-based charities.

Viviani will golf for Rome Hospital Foundation while Campanaro for the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Fund as they continue their annual fundraising tradition that is now entering its’ eighth year.

Viviani is a member of the Rome Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors, and donations he raises will help fund necessary medical equipment purchases for Rome Memorial Hospital.

Campanaro is raising funds to support the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Fund to assist in that organization’s efforts to

provide financial assistance to families who children face serious illness.

Rome Hospital Foundation provides vital philanthropic support to Rome Memorial Hospital, according to officials.

Rome Hospital Foundation is a separate 501 (c) (3) and an integral partner in Rome Memorial Hospital’s mission to provide quality healthcare with compassion.

Rome Hospital Foundation accepts gifts on behalf of Rome Memorial Hospital and works to fund both present and future equipment and program needs, the organization said.

The mission of the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Fund is to provide financial assistance to families of dependent children who suffer from serious illness of any kind.

Since the organizations’ inception in 1986, the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Fund has provided more than $811,887 in assistance to families in need.

The 28th Annual Michelle Adey Open will tee off on Sunday, July 17 at the Rome Country Club.

The tournament has a shotgun start of 8:15 a.m. with check-in beginning at 7. The entry fee is $85 per golfer with all proceeds going to benefit the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Foundation, Inc.

Openings are available and participants must be pre-registered. For more information, contact tournament director Mike Adey at 336-0818.

Michelle Adey, the daughter of Michael Adey and Mary Carmel Wolf, died of Cystic Fibrosis in 1982 at the age of 6 years old. To keep her memory alive and to help families of children with life-threatening illnesses deal with financial burden of travel, hospital costs and other expenses, Michelle’s family and friends started the ‘Michelle Fund’.

Over $500,000 in donations have been used to help more than 300 families in the Mohawk Valley.

The forum will feature Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-47, Rome, and Assemblyman Anthony J. Brindisi, D-119, Utica as speakers. Legislators have been invited by the chamber’s Government Affairs Committee to provide information on legislation that will impact business.

The following are to receive Yellow Rose of Challenge awards:

Carolyn Trela-Ferlo

Trela-Ferlo has been an educator for over 26 years as both a teacher and school administrator. While assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Whitesboro High School, she developed a Freshman Transition Program and co-wrote the curriculum for the class. The course centered on character education and study skills.

As the high school liaison with Mohawk Valley Community College, she helped bring several dual credit courses to Whitesboro High School students. She is a trained building coordinator for the Dignity for All Students Act. She has been a member and officer for the Whitesboro Administration Organization, as well as a member of the National Association of Secondary Principals, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the School Administrators Association of New York.

She has been a volunteer for the Rome Polish Home, the Drums Along the Mohawk drum and bugle corps competition, the Rome Art and Community Center, and Rome Lions Club. She is also active in her church, St. John the Baptist.

Mary Carmel Wolf

Michelle Adey, the 6-year-old daughter of Mike Adey and Mary Carmel Wolf, died of cystic fibrosis in 1982. Thanks to the help of friends and family, the Michelle M. Adey Memorial Fund was established to keep her memory alive by assisting other families whose children face serious illnesses. Carmel is the secretary of the fund. Operating in the greater Utica-Rome region, it is the longest running fund of its kind in the area. The uniqueness of the fund is that it is run by an all-volunteer local board with no paid staff and no administration costs. Virtually every cent donated goes to help families in need.

Additional areas of her involvement include being a 20-year member of the Mohawk Valley Community College Board of Trustees, assistant secretary of Wednesday Morning Club and a member of the Rome Twigs.

Rosemel Atkinson

Atkinson has been the administrator since 1996 of the following subsidiaries of Rome Memorial Hospital: Rome Medical Group, Delta Medical Group, and the Camden Family Care Group.

She is responsible for recruitment of providers for the medical offices. Hospitals and physician practices depend on key individuals to provide services to members of the community, ensuring quality care for the patients.

Cheryl Haritatos

Haritatos is the director of BAE Systems Information Solutions Inc. Rome Operations at Griffiss Business and Technology Park, responsible for all technical, contractual, financial and security of more than 50 personnel and all business development functions while overseeing a $22 million annual budget.

Since 1998, she has managed programs in intelligence information handling systems, command and control efforts, knowledge management, software engineering, imagery exploitation, cyber and cross domain solutions, man-machine interface concepts, and many other programs in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate.

Susan M. Hanson

Hanson has chaired the Rome Crop Walk for more than 10 years; she was a member of the Ski Patrol at Woods Valley Ski Area for 22 years; she has been a member of the Rome city-wide Relay for Life Committee for three years and a member of the Rainbow of Hope/Faith Relay for Life Team for more than 10 years; she was a Girl Scout Leader for several years and a member of its board of directors.

She was a mentor for students with behavior problems.

Hanson is also a member of the Rome Twigs where she assists in their activities to support Rome Memorial Hospital. Hanson has also helped at the Rome Family Y, where she helped to teacha class in water safety and drowning prevention; and the Rome Art and Community Center.

Hanson retired from Rome Hospital after 20 years of service as a medical technologist.

The Yellow Rose of Challenge awards will be presented by the Rome Professional Business Women Chapter — Beth Ann Jones, president, and Lucille R. Argenzia, chair. The award was initiated in the late 1980s, and recipients of the award believe in the tenant of Women Helping Women.
